Sales Interview Questions and Answers (Including "Sell Me This Pen")

Sales interviews are partly a live demonstration: the way you communicate in the interview is evidence of how you sell. Expect questions on targets, process, resilience and a role-play.

Common sales questions

Tell me about your sales record.

Give numbers: target, achievement, deal size and sales cycle. "I closed 118% of a ₹1.2 crore annual target, mostly mid-market deals with a 45-day cycle."

How do you handle rejection?

Show a process: "I separate the outcome from my effort, review what I could do differently, and keep my pipeline full so no single 'no' matters too much."

How do you handle the objection 'it's too expensive'?

Acknowledge it, ask what they are comparing against, then reframe around value and cost of inaction, with a proof point from a similar customer.

Walk me through your sales process.

Prospecting, qualification (budget, authority, need, timeline), discovery, demo or proposal, objection handling, closing and account growth, with an example from each stage.

"Sell me this pen"

The interviewer is testing whether you ask before you pitch. Start with questions: "When did you last use a pen? What do you use it for? What matters to you in one?" Then pitch only the benefits that match their answers, handle one objection, and ask for the sale directly.

Frequently asked questions

What do sales interviewers look for most?

Evidence of hitting targets, a repeatable process, resilience and strong listening.

How should a fresher answer sales questions?

Use examples from college events, sponsorship drives, part-time jobs or anything where you persuaded people, with numbers where possible.
